Work Experience Elaborated

Product Designer: Cognizant Accelerator (Quick Left)

October 2017 – Current

Being a product designer at Cognizant Accelerator, previously Quick Left, means that I am part of a startup culture that feeds the needs of a fortune 200 company. We are currently in Launch Pad 2, a 6 month MVP sprint that works to develop an idea quickly and then seek funding from internal investment. There are currently 10 teams working on 10 different ideas that range across all the major industries. Blockchain and machine learning are part of nearly every team. The basic idea of the Cognizant Accelerator and the Launch Pad program is that we make digital products that aren’t just made for one client; they are scalable products used for many clients. In the mad dash for the future, Cognizant has made this accelerator program to move away from the antiquated waterfall methodology that product development has followed for years.

My role as a product designer is to speak the voice of the users and move the design conversation forward in conjunction with development. Here is a list of what I do:

● Concepting and requirements gathering for product development
● Wireframing
● Creating the visual designs (comps)
● Collaborating with front end engineers to implement visual designs
● Motion design
● Performing UX research to support user-centered design practices
● Photography

UI/UX Designer: Exadel

March 2017 – October 2017

As a UI/UX designer at Exadel, I was part of a well-defined user-centered design team that helped create digital products for some of the world’s largest companies. I operated as a trusted design lead with clients as we navigated the process of developing a product for their company. On any given day, I could have been found performing these duties:

● Concepting and requirements gathering for product development
● Wireframing
● Creating the visual designs (comps)
● Collaborating with front end engineers to implement visual designs
● Motion design
● Logo design & branding
● Developing marketing collateral to be used on websites and email campaigns
● Performing UX research to support user-centered design practices
● Photography for company website

Visual Designer: Useagility

February 2016 – March 2017

As a visual designer at Useagility, I was responsible for applying the color, typography, photography and look/feel for all website wireframes that the team develops through their detailed user-centered design methods. Here is a list of my duties:

● Designing style guides to be be applied to sophisticated wireframes that the team develops in Axure
● Creating the visual designs (comps) in Photoshop for the pages designed in Axure
● Studio photography
● Product styling
● Web Design
● Logo & Branding
● Developing marketing collateral to be used on websites and email campaigns
● Recruiting participants for testing sessions (finding usability of website/application)
● Taking care of all the office plants

Art Director: Brockton Creative Group

September 2015 – January 2016

As an art director at Kinetic Supply, my primary challenge was nurturing a sense of belonging and safety within a small creative group who had recently been purchased by a larger company. Within this structure, I created script-based logos, digital billboard ads, and all manner of web/print collateral. One of my primary efforts was also in developing and maintaining and ongoing email campaign using IBM’s email marketing program, SilverPop. I was responsible for organizing the email calendar, creating the email designs, and scheduling all campaigns for deployment.

Founder & Lead Designer: The Design Valley

May 2010 – Present

I formed this agency, which represents the constellation of designers, programmers, developers, front-end engineers, web hosting specialists, copy writers, and photographers. Our focus has been on developing websites for individuals and companies in the gentle birth world of midwives and doulas.

Therapist, Educator & Creator: Empowered Papa

May 2008 – Present

When Andrea and I were expecting our first baby, we encountered an amazing amount of information, yet not all of it was useful. Furthermore, most of the material didn’t address the dad’s role in birth. We gathered everything we found to be good and developed a childbirth prep class for dads. The idea caught on.

The work I do with Empowered Papa has grown in scope and volume. Here’s what I do:

  • Teach a childbirth prep class specifically geared for dads
  • Develop and teach a counseling skills course for birth professionals
  • Create and maintain, which has half a million views
  • Create tutorial videos for online learning
  • Create and maintain a database of professionals

Empowered Papa has allowed me to travel around North America to teach and give keynote presentations. I joke that I am a b-list celebrity within the small world of gentle birth.

Therapist & Psychological Testing: Wieland & Associates, Inc.

February 2010 – June 2012  (2 years 4 months)

This is where I cut my teeth in the counseling world. I had a full case-load of counseling clients and also headed up the testing department. My responsibilities included the following:

  • Administered tests for intelligence, personality, clinical functioning, and spectrum disorders
  • Scored all testing material
  • Wrote the psychological evaluations
  • Coordinated billing with insurance companies
  • Delivered assessment results to clients, schools, & legal system
  • Overhauled assessment department by streamlining managed care billing procedures, organizing testing materials, and clarifying client contact procedures

Even though I will likely never return to performing psychological testing, I am thrilled to have had such an intimate view into the human experience.
